Louis Saha has named Real Madrid as a potential destination for Scott McTominay, a move that would reunite the Scotland international with former Manchester United manager José Mourinho, who currently manages the Spanish club.

McTominay left Old Trafford for Napoli in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth £25.9 million. He quickly became a key figure in Serie A, helping Napoli win the league title in his debut season — a run of form that has since attracted reported interest from Real Madrid, with Italian outlets claiming the club made enquiries to establish his availability.

Saha, speaking to BettingLounge, backed the move emphatically. “Scott McTominay leaving Manchester United is in the past, but he’s a terrific player who wasn’t fully appreciated there,” the former United forward said. “United failed to maximise his potential, which has been a recurring mistake for the club down the years.”

Saha went further, arguing that McTominay has the quality to thrive at the Bernabéu alongside England midfielder Jude Bellingham. “He has the calibre to play anywhere, including Real Madrid, and pairing him with Jude Bellingham would be fascinating. They share similar dynamic profiles, and McTominay has proven his value at the highest level — it would be great for Scotland also.”

Should a transfer materialise, Manchester United would stand to benefit financially. When McTominay departed for Naples, United negotiated a 10% sell-on clause, meaning they would receive a cut of any future fee Napoli receive for the midfielder.

Mourinho managed McTominay during his time at Old Trafford, with the midfielder making 31 appearances under the Portuguese coach. A move to Real Madrid would therefore represent a reunion as well as a significant step up in profile for the 28-year-old.
