England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami on Thursday evening faces the threat of a weather-related delay, with South Florida authorities issuing an extreme heat warning ahead of the 5pm local kick-off at Hard Rock Stadium.

Forecasters predict an ambient temperature of 33°C at kick-off, but a Saharan dust plume that has travelled across the Atlantic Ocean is expected to create a thermal blanket over the region, pushing the ‘feels like’ temperature to approximately 44°C. The same plume is also expected to worsen air quality, adding another layer of difficulty for players in what is already a high-stakes knockout fixture.

Global players’ union FIFPro officially recommends that matches be delayed or postponed when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature — a measure that accounts for ambient heat, humidity, wind, and solar radiation — exceeds 28°C, or when the standard ambient temperature surpasses 36°C. On those benchmarks, Thursday’s fixture sits in a risk zone, though FIFA is expected to make every effort to ensure the game proceeds safely.

Thunderstorms, which caused England’s Round of 32 clash with Mexico to be delayed near the Estadio Azteca, cannot be entirely ruled out given Florida’s notoriously unpredictable summer weather, though forecasters currently consider them unlikely for the Miami area at kick-off.

Hard Rock Stadium does not feature a retractable roof or air conditioning, leaving players and fans fully exposed to the outdoor conditions — a contrast to some other venues used at this tournament. France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay was played in a reported 38°C, while Croatia’s exit against Portugal at the same stage came in 35-degree heat, suggesting FIFA has already shown a willingness to proceed in extreme temperatures.

England reached the quarter-finals by defeating Croatia, Panama, DR Congo, and co-hosts Mexico. Norway, whose run has been fuelled by Erling Haaland’s goals and their supporters’ viral Viking row celebrations, eliminated Brazil to set up the last-eight meeting. A place in the World Cup semi-finals is at stake.
