Erasmus starts Pollard over Feinberg-Mngomezulu as Springboks face must-not-lose second Test

Handré Pollard returns to the Springboks’ starting line-up at fly-half for Saturday’s second Test against the All Blacks at DHL Stadium in Cape Town, with head coach Rassie Erasmus citing the 32-year-old’s record of performing “under extreme pressure” as the reason for the change.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who started in the 33-16 first-Test defeat at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, drops to the bench, while Manie Libbok has been omitted from the squad entirely after coming on as a replacement in that game. South Africa cannot afford another loss — a defeat in Cape Town would make it mathematically impossible for them to win the four-match Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

Pollard will partner Cobus Reinach at half-back after scrum-half Grant Williams was ruled out through injury. The 36-year-old Reinach carries some baggage into the match: his yellow card for an intentional knock-on left the Springboks reduced to 13 men for the final quarter in Johannesburg, a period that proved decisive against Dave Rennie’s All Blacks.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu, only 24 and just two matches into his return from an ankle injury, struggled to impose himself at Ellis Park, with a tendency to surrender possession proving particularly costly. Erasmus was careful to frame the selection as a tactical complement rather than a demotion, explaining that the plan is to use Feinberg-Mngomezulu and replacement scrum-half Morne van den Berg as impact options off the bench in the closing stages.

“Handré has delivered for us under extreme pressure, and we feel that what he and Cobus have the potential to bring at the beginning of the game, and then have Morne and Sacha come on later with their different styles of play, will be good for us this weekend,” Erasmus said.

The fly-half rotation is nothing new for South Africa. During the Nations Championship in July, Libbok, Pollard and 20-year-old Vusi Moyo all received starts, and Feinberg-Mngomezulu himself started against Argentina earlier this month on his return from injury. The depth at the position is considerable; the question on Saturday is whether Pollard’s big-game composure can help the Springboks level the series before it moves to its final two fixtures.
