Argentina's 3-2 comeback over Egypt in Atlanta prompts Brady's 28-3 Super Bowl comparison
Trailing 2-0 in the 67th minute against Egypt, Argentina scored three unanswered goals — including one from Lionel Messi and a Enzo Fernández stoppage-time winner — to win 3-2 in a World Cup round-of-16 match that drew comparisons to the Patriots' Super Bowl LI comeback.
Argentina trailed Egypt 2-0 with 23 minutes remaining in their World Cup round-of-16 match at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday before scoring three unanswered goals to win 3-2, a comeback that prompted Tom Brady to invoke his own legendary Super Bowl LI reversal.
Lionel Messi was among the scorers as Argentina turned the match around from the 79th minute onward, with Enzo Fernández sealing the win two minutes into stoppage time to ensure the match never reached extra time. The victory keeps Argentina’s bid to defend their World Cup title alive.
Brady, who quarterbacked the New England Patriots to a 34-28 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons after trailing 28-3 in Super Bowl LI, was quick to acknowledge what he had witnessed. “Yeah so that might top 28-3,” Brady wrote on X, accompanied by a mind-blown emoji.
The venue added a layer of irony to the moment: Argentina completed their comeback at Atlanta Stadium, the home ground of the very Falcons franchise whose Super Bowl collapse Brady was referencing.
Arguments can be made on both sides of the comparison. The Patriots began chipping away at Atlanta’s 28-3 deficit before the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LI, whereas Argentina did not score until after the second hydration break — a point in the match that some now regard as the equivalent of a fourth quarter in football. Argentina also clinched without needing extra time, while the Patriots required overtime to complete their own comeback.
Brady was far from alone in his reaction. Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Brunson, and other prominent sports figures also took to social media to express their astonishment at what unfolded in Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon.
