England's Florida training camp shaken by 6.1-magnitude earthquake ahead of Costa Rica warm-up
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake — the strongest in the region for 150 years — struck off the Cuban coast and was felt across Florida on Tuesday, rattling England's World Cup training base in West Palm Beach a day before their warm-up against Costa Rica in Orlando.
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook England’s World Cup training base in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday, one day before Thomas Tuchel’s side face Costa Rica in Orlando in their final warm-up fixture before the tournament begins. The quake, the strongest to hit the region in 150 years, originated off the west coast of Cuba but sent tremors across Florida, including Orlando and Miami, prompting evacuations of several buildings.
The National Weather Service moved quickly to rule out any secondary threat, confirming there was no risk of a tsunami to the United States. “NO tsunami, NO danger,” the agency stated. A spokesperson for the US Geological Survey cautioned, however, that aftershocks remained possible: “We are still getting felt reports and would expect aftershocks from a quake of this size.”
England have been based in Florida since arriving in the United States last week. Their preparations appeared on track on Saturday when Tuchel’s side edged New Zealand 1-0 in Tampa, Harry Kane heading home the only goal. Wednesday’s match against Costa Rica in Orlando will be their last test before the World Cup proper gets under way.
After the Costa Rica fixture, England travel to their main tournament base in Kansas City, Missouri. They open Group L against Croatia on 17 June in Arlington, just outside Dallas, before facing Ghana in Boston on 23 June and Panama in New Jersey on 27 June.
Depending on how the group stage unfolds, a potential last-16 tie against co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City could await. Mexico, along with the United States and Canada, are co-hosting the 2026 World Cup.
