England routed 45-21 by South Africa as discipline crisis and Furbank injury deepen tour misery

England slumped to a fifth consecutive Test defeat, losing 45-21 to South Africa at Ellis Park in their Nations Championship opener. Captain Jamie George admitted discipline 'let us down' after Tommy Freeman and Guy Pepper were sin-binned simultaneously, leaving the tourists with 13 men in the final seven minutes.

England’s tour of South Africa began in the worst possible fashion on Saturday as the Springboks dismantled Steve Borthwick’s side 45-21 at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, extending England’s losing run to five consecutive Test matches. The defeat was compounded by the news that full-back George Furbank has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour after undergoing emergency appendix surgery.

The result was effectively sealed when Tommy Freeman and Guy Pepper were shown yellow cards in the 71st and 72nd minutes respectively — Freeman for a dangerous tackle, Pepper for a late challenge — leaving England to defend with just 13 men for the final seven minutes. South Africa capitalised immediately, with Malcolm Marx and BJ Dixon crossing to complete a punishing evening for the tourists.

Captain Jamie George was candid in his post-match assessment. “There are some clear things we need to make sure we get better at and as players we have to take a lot more responsibility with regards to our discipline, which let us down,” he said. George also struck a cautiously optimistic note, insisting the Springboks “know they have been in a Test match” and pointing to the upcoming home fixture against Fiji in Liverpool as an opportunity to respond.

The indiscipline is a mounting concern. England have now collected 10 yellow cards and one red card across their six matches in 2026, a pattern that was already flagged in the squad’s post-Six Nations review. Borthwick declined to single out either Freeman or Pepper, describing Freeman’s infringement as “a slight timing error” and attributing Pepper’s to the physical pressure South Africa deliberately impose on opponents.

“We want our execution and decision making to be at a very high level and these young players will learn from this experience of playing against the best in the world,” the head coach said.

The injury to Furbank adds further strain to the touring party. The full-back was withdrawn from the matchday squad after being admitted to hospital on Friday evening with abdominal pain. Borthwick confirmed he underwent surgery on Saturday morning and remains in hospital, with the 28-year-old set to stay in South Africa to recover before flying home separately. “He is gutted and he will miss the next couple of weeks,” Borthwick said.

England now turn their attention to the second leg of the tour before returning home to face Fiji, with Borthwick’s squad in need of both a result and a significant improvement in discipline if the summer is to be salvaged.
