Baloucoune ruled out hours before kick-off as O'Brien steps in for Ireland against Wallabies
Rob Baloucoune has been ruled out of Ireland's Nations Championship opener against Australia in Sydney through injury, with Jimmy O'Brien called up to start on the right wing in his place.
Rob Baloucoune has been ruled out of Ireland’s Nations Championship opener against Australia just hours before kick-off in Sydney, forcing a late reshuffle to Andy Farrell’s starting XV with Jimmy O’Brien drafted onto the right wing.
The Irish Rugby Football Union confirmed the change in a brief social media statement but did not disclose the nature of the injury. Baloucoune had only recently returned to action after elbow surgery, featuring for Ulster in the Challenge Cup final — his sole appearance since the Six Nations.
Despite the disruption, Ireland still name a formidable side. Dan Sheehan captains the team, with Sam Prendergast continuing at fly-half alongside Jamison Gibson-Park at scrum-half. Hugo Keenan starts at full-back, while Bundee Aki is among a powerful replacements bench that also includes Tadhg Beirne and Rónan Kelleher.
Joe Schmidt’s Australia are unchanged for the contest. Harry Wilson captains the Wallabies, with Carter Gordon starting at fly-half and Ryan Lonergan at scrum-half. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Len Ikitau continue their midfield partnership, while lock Lachlan Shaw is in line for a potential debut off the bench.
