Zoe Stratford, the England Red Roses captain who lifted the Women’s Rugby World Cup in September, will leave Gloucester Hartpury at the end of the current season and join Sale Sharks for the 2026/27 Premiership Women’s Rugby campaign. The 29-year-old, who holds 69 international caps and was named World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year in 2021, is currently on a break from the game after announcing her pregnancy.

Stratford cited both personal and professional motivations for the move north. Her partner, Luke, is already on Sale’s coaching staff, and the couple are expecting their first child. “Being pregnant, I really want to bring my child up as a northerner,” she said. “I haven’t played competitive rugby in the north since I was 15 or 16, and so coming back and playing up in the north is something that I’m super passionate about.”

Born in Scarborough and raised in North Yorkshire, Stratford began her club career at West Park Leeds before moving to Hartpury College and then Darlington Mowden Park, where she earned her first England cap. She has spent the bulk of her senior career at Gloucester Hartpury, winning the Premiership Women’s Rugby title three times with the West Country club.

Stratford is the second current England international to commit to Sale in the space of a week, following the announcement that centre Tatyana Heard is also leaving Gloucester Hartpury for the Manchester-based club.

Sale head coach Tom Hudson framed the signing as evidence of the club’s broader ambitions. “When I joined the club just over 12 months ago I spoke with Michelle [Orange] and Katy [Daly-McLean] about the objective of this project being to build a truly elite and world class rugby environment here in the north of England,” he said. “I think it is a real statement of intent from us as a club.”

Stratford herself pointed to the culture Hudson and owner Michelle Orange have built as a key factor. “Luke absolutely loves it at Sale. He loves Michelle’s ethos around the place, how much she drives the standards, and how passionate she is about the women’s side especially,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed success at Gloucester and with England and hopefully I can bring that experience of winning and help build that belief into the team.”

Gloucester Hartpury, meanwhile, remain on course for a fourth consecutive PWR title. Ahead of the Guinness Women’s Six Nations break, Dan Murphy’s side had already secured a home semi-final and collected try-scoring bonus points in all 14 of their league fixtures this season.
