Swanson’s message offered some reassurance that Douglas is otherwise stable, though the full prognosis will depend on the findings of a specialist visit scheduled for this week. A fractured orbital — a break in one or more of the bones surrounding the eye — can range in severity and does not always require surgery, but vision loss at the point of impact is a serious indicator that warrants close medical attention.

Douglas, who carries a 14-6 professional record, had looked like a genuine prospect heading into Sacramento. The Brazilian’s finishing streak had drawn attention, and Emmers was widely expected to be a manageable step up in competition.
