EFL chief executive Trevor Birch to step down at end of 2026-27 season
Trevor Birch has informed the EFL board of his intention to leave at the conclusion of the 2026-27 campaign, ending a six-year tenure that began in January 2021. The announcement follows the re-election of chair Rick Parry for a further three-year term.
Trevor Birch will step down as EFL chief executive at the end of the 2026-27 season, bringing a six-year tenure to a close after informing the league’s board of his decision on Friday.
Birch took charge in January 2021, having previously held senior administrative roles at Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, and Swansea City. His departure will mark a significant leadership transition for the organisation that governs the Championship, League One, and League Two.
In a statement, Birch said: “It has been a privilege to serve as chief executive of the EFL. With one more season ahead, my focus is on supporting the league, our clubs and colleagues, and ensuring a smooth and orderly transition to new leadership.”
The news comes in the immediate wake of the EFL’s annual general meeting, at which chair Rick Parry was re-elected for a further three-year term. Parry acknowledged Birch’s contribution, saying: “Trevor has led the EFL with clarity and commitment during an important period for the league. The board is thankful for his contribution and fully supports the approach being taken to ensure an orderly handover and continued stability in the 12 months ahead.”
With a full season remaining before Birch’s exit, the EFL board will have time to conduct a structured search for his successor.
