Dvalishvili demands respect for fighters after close friend Topuria's title loss

UFC bantamweight Merab Dvalishvili took to social media to condemn trash-talking aimed at fighters, issuing an open challenge to critics following compatriot Ilia Topuria's fourth-round TKO defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC White House.

Merab Dvalishvili (21-5) publicly called out online critics of fighters in a pointed post on X, challenging anyone who disrespects competitors to say it to his face — comments that arrive in the wake of close friend Ilia Topuria’s lightweight title loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC White House earlier this month.

“You disrespect the dedication and hard work to the sport that every fighter puts in when you talk s–t,” Dvalishvili wrote. “Win or lose we are all warriors and deserve respect. F–k anyone talking what they don’t know — come say it to my face.”

Dvalishvili did not name a specific target in his post, but the timing is hard to ignore. Fellow Georgian Topuria (17-1) suffered a corner stoppage at the end of the fourth round against Gaethje, with the challenger bloodying him up across the fight. The defeat was particularly stark given Topuria’s pre-fight confidence: he had repeatedly predicted a first-round knockout and held a celebration party the day before the bout.

The two fighters share a close bond, and Dvalishvili’s defence of the broader fighting community appears rooted in that friendship. His message frames the criticism not merely as personal insult but as a failure to recognise the sacrifice every competitor makes regardless of the result on the night.

Dvalishvili himself remains one of the UFC’s most active and respected bantamweights, known for his relentless wrestling-based style and durability. Whether his social media intervention draws a direct response from any of Topuria’s critics remains to be seen, but the Georgian contingent in the UFC has made clear it intends to stand together.
