Ireland will travel to Sydney on Monday without captain Caelan Doris and winger Tommy O’Brien, both ruled out of the Nations Championship Southern Series after sustaining injuries in Leinster’s 36-7 URC Grand Final victory over the Bulls at Croke Park on Friday.

Doris was forced off in the first half with a foot injury after attempting to run it off, while O’Brien — who had scored a try before limping out — suffered a groin problem. Both players will miss Ireland’s Tests against Australia (4 July), Japan (11 July), and New Zealand (18 July).

The loss of Doris is a particularly significant setback for Andy Farrell’s squad. The back-rower had been in commanding form throughout the season, and his absence leaves Ireland without their on-field leader for a demanding southern hemisphere itinerary. Leinster hooker Dan Sheehan has been named as tour captain in his place.

O’Brien’s withdrawal is equally damaging in a different sense. The 28-year-old had established himself as Ireland’s most potent attacking weapon following another strong season for province and country, and the timing of his injury — moments after crossing for a try in a Grand Final — makes it all the more frustrating.

To cover both absences, head coach Andy Farrell has called up Ulster’s uncapped duo Bryn Ward and Zac Ward as replacements in the touring squad.

The IRFU confirmed the news in an official statement: “Captain Caelan Doris (foot) and Tommy O’Brien (groin) have been ruled out of the matches against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. They have been replaced by Ulster’s uncapped duo Bryn Ward and Zac Ward. Leinster hooker Dan Sheehan will lead the three-match Tour.”
