Dorgu limps off for Denmark with thigh concern, leaving Manchester United sweating

Patrick Dorgu faces an anxious wait over a potential thigh injury after being substituted just 30 minutes into Denmark’s Nations League fixture against Wales on Sunday, with the Manchester United wing-back now expected to leave the international camp for further assessment at club level.

Dorgu, 21, was named in Denmark’s starting line-up but went to ground holding his left thigh before receiving treatment on the pitch. Manager Brian Riemer withdrew him from the match and has since confirmed he will need to call up a replacement, with Danish outlet TV2 reporting that Dorgu will not feature in either of Denmark’s remaining two games during the break.

“I’ve never experienced anything like it,” Riemer said after the match. “And now another one went today — also a good one. I counted up, and that was seven or eight players before today who would normally always be in a squad of 23. They’re not here. They’ve either gone home or never came at all. And now Dorgu went out today. It’s just really annoying to be honest.”

Riemer added that finding a direct replacement presents a particular challenge. “It’s easy to find a player who can be a winger, a full-back or something else, but it’s even harder to find someone who can cover more positions. So it’s going to be a bit of a headache for me.”

The news compounds a growing injury concern at Old Trafford ahead of United’s return to Premier League action on 10 October, when they host Tottenham Hotspur. Bruno Fernandes missed Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway over the weekend, while Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both withdrew from the England squad last week. Benjamin Sesko was also pulled from the Slovenia squad during the break.

The full extent of Dorgu’s thigh problem will not be known until he returns to United for assessment, leaving the club uncertain over his availability for the Tottenham fixture.
