Barthez eliminated in round of 16 of TFC Legends Cup by Van den Boomen

Fabien Barthez has just enjoyed a return to grace with the French national team… and a decisive elimination on the Toulouse side. In the Legends Cup organized by the Les Violets website, TFC supporters chose Branco van den Boomen over the 1998 World Cup champion, with the Dutchman receiving 67% of the vote in the round of 16.

The verdict is harsh, but it is explained. Barthez played only 28 matches in the violet shirt, his first in September 1991, before joining Olympique de Marseille the following summer — where he would win the Ligue des Champions in 1993. His time at Toulouse therefore remains anecdotal in the club’s collective memory.

Van den Boomen, meanwhile, left a much deeper mark. In three seasons, the Dutch midfielder was one of the major architects of TFC’s rise to Ligue 1 in 2022, then contributed to the conquest of the Coupe de France the following season. Les Violets describe him as “the most striking player of the recent era”, which earned him a direct qualification for the competition’s final bracket.

Barthez had nonetheless passed the preliminary round by eliminating Gérald Passi, but the confrontation with Van den Boomen was short-lived. His return to the national spotlight — L’Équipe reports that Mike Maignan was reportedly immediately won over by his discourse, and his performance in Turkey against the French national team was praised — apparently was not enough to revive Toulouse nostalgia.
