Djed Spence has become an unlikely fan favourite at the 2026 World Cup after inspiring a viral terrace chant following his impact substitute appearance in England’s comeback victory over Norway.

Fans Ben Cipolla and Dan Lucas wrote the song after Spence entered the pitch in the 86th minute and played a key role in turning the tie around, helping England advance to the semi-finals. Set to the melody of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart, the chant spread rapidly among the England support.

The choice of song carries an added poignancy. Tyler, the Welsh singer best known for the 1983 power ballad, passed away unexpectedly on 8 July at the age of 75 following complications from emergency surgery.

The full lyrics run as follows:

Turn around, Djed Spence, every now and then he’s called upon.
Turn around, Djed Spence, every now and then he’s called upon.
England needs you now tonight, England needs you more than ever.
If your broken jaw was tight, now it’s fully back together.
And you know you can play left or right, down the wing you’re so strong.
You take a player on and do a brilliant job, you should’ve had a pen from being tackled by Bobb.

The chorus continues:

We really loved you tonight.
Oh, Djed was such a star tonight, oh Djed was such a star.
Once upon a time he was loaned out to Rennes, now he’s one of England’s men.
Solid in defence, total eclipse of Djed Spence.

The lyrics reference several threads of Spence’s career — his loan spell at Rennes, his versatility across both flanks, and a recovery from a jaw injury — as well as a specific moment from the Norway match in which he appeared to be fouled by Bobb without a penalty being awarded.

Spence’s emergence as a crowd favourite has also attracted transfer attention, with reports suggesting clubs have registered interest following his World Cup performances.
