Diomandé criticizes Renard after Ivory Coast's defeat to Cameroon
Ivory Coast lost 0-1 to Cameroon in a friendly match on Saturday at Ebimpé, with Real Madrid winger Yan Diomandé publicly criticizing Hervé Renard's rotation choices. The French manager acknowledged his responsibility for the defeat.
Ivory Coast suffered their first defeat under Hervé Renard’s second spell as manager, losing 0-1 to Cameroon in a friendly match played Saturday at Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé. A goal from Bil Nsongo early in the second half (46’) was enough for the Indomitable Lions to surprise the Elephants.
The French manager had chosen this fixture to make sweeping changes, altering ten positions in his starting lineup compared to the previous match. A decision that did not convince Yan Diomandé. Brought on in the 60th minute, the Real Madrid winger did not mince words on NCI: “It’s true that it’s a friendly, but an Ivory Coast-Cameroon match is always special. We wanted to win, but the coach wanted to try something. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.”
Faced with this unfiltered criticism, Renard chose to take full responsibility. “I take responsibility for this defeat. I wanted to rotate the team,” said the manager, before justifying his approach: “I wanted to see all the new players in action in this match. Tonight, I’m learning a lot from each player’s performance. That’s why I took this risk.”
This defeat comes after two convincing victories in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers — against Ghana (2-0) and Somalia (2-0) — which had launched Renard’s return to the helm of the Elephants on a positive note. The simmering clash between the manager and one of his key players illustrates nonetheless the tensions that can arise from proactive squad rotation against a top regional rival.
