Denmark’s friendly international against Ukraine in Odense was halted midway through the second half on Sunday, with the score at 2-1, after a player suffered a medical emergency on the pitch.

Danish media reports identified the player involved as Christian Eriksen, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midfielder. No official confirmation had been issued at the time of publication.

Eriksen is no stranger to medical crisis on the international stage. At Euro 2020, he collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s group-stage match against Finland, requiring resuscitation on the pitch before being taken to hospital. He subsequently made a full recovery.

Serie A regulations prevented Eriksen from returning to Inter Milan — the club he was contracted to at the time of his collapse — because of rules prohibiting players fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator from competing in the Italian top flight. He instead joined Brentford in the Premier League, where he rebuilt his career before later moving to Manchester United.

This is a developing story. Further details are expected as Danish football authorities and medical staff provide updates.
