Colombian teenager Orozco completes Manchester United move on his 18th birthday
Cristian Orozco has joined Manchester United's academy after the club finalised a deal with Colombian side Fortaleza CEIF, an agreement that had been in place for nine months pending the midfielder's 18th birthday.
Cristian Orozco completed his move to Manchester United on Monday, the day the Colombian midfielder turned 18, with the club having agreed terms with Fortaleza CEIF nine months earlier on the condition that the transfer could not be finalised until he came of age.
The 18-year-old will begin his time at United in the academy, where coaches will assess his development before deciding his next steps. A place in the Under-21 setup for the coming season is considered the most likely immediate pathway.
Orozco spoke to ESPN Colombia about what supporters can expect from him. “I know my strengths are my physicality and my technique,” he said. “I have those qualities and, with the gift God gave me, I don’t think it will be too difficult. But everything is about adapting. I’m very young and that’s what I’ll need to do.”
The teenager visited Carrington and Old Trafford in December, where he was given a tour of the training facilities and took part in sessions with United’s academy teams. He acknowledged that learning English quickly will be central to his settling-in process. “I expect to learn a lot of English. When I was there, I realised just how important it is,” he said. “I want to arrive and learn as quickly as possible. That’s what’s required so I can show my level and everything I’m capable of.”
United will provide English lessons to support his transition. The club has taken a similar approach with recent signings Sekou Kone from Mali and Diego Leon from Paraguay, both brought in as high-potential teenagers over the past 18 months.
Orozco’s arrival is part of a broader recruitment strategy introduced by Ineos since the group took control of United’s football operations, focusing on acquiring young players with first-team potential at an early stage of their development.
