Delgado drops Silva but falls to rear-naked choke in first UFC main event

Jose Delgado’s first UFC main event ended in defeat, but the featherweight prospect left Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona on September 12 with his head held high after pushing elite contender Jean Silva to the limit at Noche UFC 4.

Delgado (12-3) entered the fight as a heavy underdog against Silva (18-3) and immediately justified the billing of an upset when he dropped the Brazilian with a sharp cross-hook combination in the opening round. Silva, who produced unusually low output throughout the first stanza, survived the knockdown and regrouped.

The momentum shifted in the second round as Delgado struggled to find his range and Silva began to impose himself. The Brazilian sealed the finish in the third, locking in a slick one-arm rear-naked choke that forced Delgado to tap.

Despite the loss, Delgado was candid and upbeat in his post-fight reflection, taking to Instagram to describe the experience as one he would not trade.

“Well sh*t so it goes,” Delgado wrote. “Dared to be great yesterday and came up short. But man I loved every second of being on that stage with high level opposition, that includes the heartbreaking pain of failure. Pure freedom. Insert something cliche about bouncing back here. Thank you to God for His guidance and my village for backing me. Also thanks to everyone in that arena for making that walk what it was. Love yall.”

Delgado singled out the Glendale crowd for special praise, crediting the atmosphere at Desert Diamond Arena with making his walkout a memorable one. The defeat is his first in a UFC main event slot and only his third professional loss, leaving the featherweight prospect with plenty of runway to rebuild.
