Dana White targets Super Bowl-level viewership as UFC stages first-ever White House event
UFC CEO Dana White is predicting Super Bowl-scale viewership for UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, as the promotion stages an unprecedented lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje on the White House lawn.
Dana White is forecasting the biggest audience in MMA history for UFC Freedom 250, which takes place on the White House lawn this Sunday, June 14, headlined by a lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje.
“We’re expecting Super Bowl-type numbers for this fight,” White said. For context, Super Bowl LX in February drew an average of 124.9 million viewers in the United States — a figure that dwarfs the current MMA viewership record of 9 million domestic viewers, set by the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano Netflix card in May.
The event, officially titled UFC Freedom 250, forms part of America 250 — a national celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. White described the occasion as genuinely historic for a sport that spent years fighting for legitimacy in the country.
“It’s definitely a one-of-one event,” White told TNT Fight Sports. “And when you think about where we came from, and how this whole sport started, and how it was frowned upon in the United States, to now be headed to the White House is pretty surreal.”
The UFC has previous form with landmark one-off productions. Its 2024 event at the Las Vegas Sphere, held in celebration of Mexican Independence, reportedly cost the promotion $20 million. White says UFC White House will cost significantly more, and promises a production to match.
“The Sphere should’ve won every award there is in production,” White said. “If we don’t win every production award for the White House fight, they should just stop doing production awards.”
White also teased an extraordinary entrance for the main event fighters. “The main event guys will come from the Oval Office,” he said. “The walkouts and everything for this fight are incredible and a one-of-one.”
Whether the event can come close to Super Bowl numbers remains to be seen, but the UFC’s ambition for Sunday is clear: Topuria vs. Gaethje, on the most recognisable lawn in the world, is being positioned as the most significant night in the sport’s history.
