Cyborg reveals the mission driving her into a final MMA fight against Vieira
Cris Cyborg defends the PFL women's featherweight title against Ketlen Vieira on 22 August in Tampa in what is reported to be her retirement bout. The Brazilian legend says proving women's MMA could be as exciting as the men's game has been her defining motivation.
Cris Cyborg will defend the PFL Women’s Featherweight Championship against Ketlen Vieira on 22 August at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa — a fight widely reported to be the final MMA appearance of her career. Ahead of the bout, the Brazilian opened up on the philosophy that has shaped more than two decades of competition.
In a video released by the PFL, Cyborg pointed to a single, persistent goal: making women’s MMA impossible to ignore.
“A lot of people didn’t believe in girls’ fights,” Cyborg said. “‘Ah, girls fight terrible.’ I tried to show the opposite. I wanted to do exciting fights like the guys do exciting fights. Finish the fight. This is what motivated me. What I feel now, I feel very blessed. The sport changed my life. Not just because I am the champion, but I think it shows a lot of different ways to live my life.”
It is a motivation that has translated into a career few fighters — male or female — can match. Cyborg has held championships across multiple major promotions and has been a fixture at the top of the women’s featherweight division for the better part of her career, which stretches back over 20 years.
With the PFL title already around her waist, the fight against Vieira carries both competitive and symbolic weight. A victory would allow Cyborg to close out her career as champion, bookending a journey that she credits with reshaping her life far beyond the cage.
Vieira, a former UFC bantamweight title challenger, represents a stern final test. The Brazilian has the power and grappling credentials to trouble any opponent, and the matchup gives Cyborg’s reported farewell a credible, high-stakes opponent rather than a ceremonial send-off.
PFL Tampa is scheduled for 22 August at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa.
