Cruz Beckham's words to devastated David after England's World Cup semi-final exit captured by lip reader
The Beckham family watched on in Atlanta as England were eliminated from the World Cup in a semi-final defeat to Argentina. A lip reader picked up Cruz Beckham's consoling words to his father Sir David after the final whistle.
Sir David Beckham was left heartbroken in Atlanta as England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina ended in defeat, with late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez overturning Anthony Gordon’s opener. A lip reader has since revealed the touching exchange between Sir David and his son Cruz in the immediate aftermath.
Cruz, wearing his father’s iconic number seven shirt, approached Sir David after the final whistle and asked: “You OK?” The pair then shared a warm embrace. In a separate clip analysed by lip reader Jeremy Freeman, Cruz was also seen asking his father: “How did we…” before trailing off.
Sir David, 51, attended the match alongside wife Lady Victoria and their children Romeo, Harper, Cruz, and Cruz’s girlfriend Jackie Apostel. The former England captain posted on social media after the game: “Heartbreak for us all but memories that inspire and last forever. Thank you to our team, our fans & our country for what you have given us in this World Cup.”
The defeat carries a particular weight for Sir David, whose own England career was defined by tournament near-misses. He represented his country in five major tournaments and three World Cups without ever advancing beyond the quarter-finals. Most memorably, he was sent off for kicking Diego Simeone as England lost on penalties to Argentina in the 1998 World Cup — a moment that made his redemptive winning penalty against the same opponents in 2002 all the more significant.
In a strange historical echo, Diego Simeone’s son Giuliano started for Argentina in the semi-final.
The Beckhams have been a consistent presence at England’s matches throughout the tournament. Sir David was briefly drawn into a social media storm after photos of Lady Victoria’s muted reaction to Jude Bellingham’s extra-time winner against Norway went viral. He later defended her, saying: “She was celebrating inside I promise, her reactions were slightly slower than mine.”
England’s wait for a World Cup final appearance now stretches to 60 years. The Three Lions will next face France in the third-place play-off in Miami.
