Crusaders hand uncapped Gus Brown a debut as prop injuries mount before Blues qualifier
Fletcher Newell's knee injury — the fourth prop to join the Crusaders' casualty list — has opened the door for 22-year-old Gus Brown to make his senior debut off the bench in this weekend's Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final against the Blues.
Gus Brown is set to make his Crusaders debut off the bench in Saturday’s Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final against the Blues after Fletcher Newell was ruled out with a knee injury sustained in last week’s win over the Hurricanes. Newell’s absence leaves the Christchurch club without a clear timeline for his return and makes him the fourth prop added to an already lengthy injury list.
Brown, 22, holds a single New Zealand Under-20 cap from two years ago and had not been expecting the call until the extent of the Crusaders’ front-row crisis became clear. “I had a bit of an idea after the game. After a couple of injuries, I got told to stay ready. Then Sunday night I got the call that I was potentially making my debut this weekend,” he said.
“I’m super excited. I called the parents, and they’ll be coming down, so hopefully I get the chance to run out there. I’ve been in all year and over all the information, so now it’s just trusting myself. The boys around me and the whole front row crew have been awesome so far this week.”
Newell’s injury has also forced a positional reshuffle across the front row, with George Bower shifting from loosehead to tighthead and Finlay Brewis coming in for his seventh start of the season at No. 1. Elsewhere in the squad, Leicester Fainga’anuku returns at openside flanker, pushing Dom Gardiner to the bench, while Braydon Ennor returns from injury to take a reserves spot. Taha Kemara and Rivez Reihana have swapped roles, with Kemara now starting and Reihana providing impact off the bench.
The Crusaders’ full injury list underlines the scale of the problem heading into the knockout rounds. Alongside Newell, Cullen Grace (knee), Maloni Kunawave (hamstring), Kershawl Sykes-Martin (neck), Seb Calder (calf), George Bell (calf), and Aki Tuivailala (concussion, graduated return to play) are all sidelined in the short term. Scott Barrett, Will Jordan, Will Tucker, Toby Bell, Mitch Drummond, James White, and Tamaiti Williams are all ruled out for the season.
Coach Rob Penney, entering his final playoffs with the club, acknowledged the team must sharpen up after a win over the Hurricanes that was not without its flaws. “There’s a little more edge around, a little lifted intensity, and that will build as we head into the back part of the week,” he said. “We felt we got a bit carried away at times, and that won’t be good enough this week. We need to finish better and complete when we’ve got opportunities.”
Penney was equally respectful of a Blues side he expects to arrive with a point to prove. “They’re a quality side, and they’ll be hurting. If you give them an inch, they’ll take it, so we’ll have to be right on.”
