Sam Lousi has signed a contract extension with the Scarlets, securing the 34-year-old second row’s future at Parc y Scarlets beyond the end of the current season.

Lousi joined the Welsh region in 2019, bringing with him a rare cross-code pedigree that included time at NRL club the New Zealand Warriors before he switched to union and represented both the Waratahs and Hurricanes in Super Rugby. He has since become one of the club’s most recognisable figures, making 112 appearances and reaching his century in the Investec Champions Cup against Pau in January in front of a full house at Parc y Scarlets.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my past seven years with this great club and my family are very happy to be staying in West Wales in a region they call home,” the Tongan international said. “This club means a huge amount to me and my family and I still feel I have a lot to give. There is real competition building within the squad, good players coming in and a lot of hunger within the group to improve and push forward next season.”

Scarlets Interim Director of Rugby Nigel Davies was emphatic about the importance of retaining the veteran lock. “Sam Lousi fit and performing at his best is one of the most impactful second rows in the league,” Davies said. “He brings physicality, aggression, gain line presence and a real edge to the team.”

Davies also highlighted qualities that can be overlooked in a player of Lousi’s physical profile. “For a big man, his understanding of space and his ability to free his hands and create opportunities for people around him are outstanding qualities. Our supporters connect strongly with players who compete emotionally and physically for the jersey and Sam has always done that.”

The Scarlets are also looking to strengthen depth in the second-row position, and Davies indicated that Lousi’s experience will be central to developing younger players arriving at the club. “Strong competition drives standards and performance and we believe Sam’s experience alongside the younger and newer players coming into the environment will be important for us next season.”
