Cormier challenges free-agent Usman Nurmagomedov to prove UFC lightweights are not 'bums'
Daniel Cormier has publicly urged unbeaten Dagestani lightweight Usman Nurmagomedov to sign with the UFC after the 22-0 fighter called the promotion's top-ranked contenders 'bums' during a chance encounter in Philadelphia following UFC 330.
Daniel Cormier has issued a direct challenge to Usman Nurmagomedov, telling the unbeaten Dagestani to stop dismissing the UFC’s lightweight division and instead come and prove his point inside the octagon. The pair crossed paths at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia after UFC 330, where Nurmagomedov made his feelings about the promotion’s top contenders clear.
Nurmagomedov, now 22-0, has become a free agent after completing his contract with the Professional Fighters League, finishing Archie Colgan in his final bout under the banner. With PFL currently navigating a merger with Most Valuable Promotions, the promotion is expected to table a significant new offer during its limited exclusive negotiation window before the UFC is permitted to approach him directly.
During his conversation with Cormier at UFC 330, Nurmagomedov reportedly questioned the calibre of opposition available to him in the UFC, labelling top-ranked lightweights “bums.” Cormier, a two-division UFC champion and Hall of Famer, pushed back immediately — and publicly.
“It’s time for legacy. You think they’re bums? Come show me,” Cormier said, punctuating the exchange with a handshake.
The UFC Hall of Famer argued that financial considerations should no longer be Nurmagomedov’s primary motivation and that the moment has arrived for him to measure himself against the biggest names in the sport. The implication was clear: a lucrative PFL return contract would be the safer path, but the UFC is where reputations are truly made.
Nurmagomedov’s trajectory invites obvious comparisons within his own family tree. His cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov retired as undefeated UFC lightweight champion, and fellow Dagestani Islam Makhachev currently holds that same title. Whether Usman opts to pursue a similar legacy — or accepts a renewed PFL deal — will likely be resolved once the promotion’s exclusive negotiating window closes.
