Como stun Leipzig 4-1 on Champions League debut as Bayern demolish Bodo/Glimt 5-0

Como announced themselves on the European stage with a 4-1 demolition of RB Leipzig at the Stadio Sinigaglia on Wednesday, capping a remarkable debut in the Champions League for Cesc Fabregas’s side. Bayern Munich were equally emphatic, putting five past Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt without reply.

Como’s qualification for Europe’s elite club competition had come with a logistical headache — their lakeside stadium required urgent upgrades to meet UEFA guidelines, with the alternative being home games played 200km away at Sassuolo’s ground. In Rome, a first-half goal from Bryan Cristante — his first in the Champions League proper, 15 years after making his competition debut as a 16-year-old for AC Milan — gave Roma the lead against Fenerbahce. The Turkish club, returning to the Champions League after an 18-year absence, levelled three minutes into the second half when Mason Greenwood played in Archie Brown, who clipped a finish over Mile Svilar. Nathan Ake headed against the crossbar late on as Fenerbahce pressed for a winner, but the match ended 1-1.

PSV Eindhoven avoided a sixth consecutive matchday-one defeat in the competition, drawing 1-1 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk. Gleiker Mendoza’s stunning low drive gave Shakhtar a halftime lead before Sergino Dest’s composed finish earned PSV a point after the break.

Ten-man Slavia Prague suffered a dramatic collapse against Lens, conceding twice in stoppage time to lose 3-2. Mikulas Konecny was dismissed just after halftime following a VAR review, yet Danijel Sturm still put the hosts ahead. Abdallah Sima equalised for Lens before Sturm restored Slavia’s lead in the 88th minute, only for Florian Thauvin to level in the 91st minute — with Lens completing the turnaround in the moments that followed.
