Coleen Rooney has described her husband Wayne as “funny and laid-back” but prone to a short temper, in a candid interview timed to the release of the couple’s upcoming Disney+ docu-series, The Real Rooneys.

Speaking to the Guardian, Coleen offered a frank four-word character sketch of the former Manchester United and England striker. “Wayne is funny and laid-back. He can be a charmer, but can have a short temper,” she said. Wayne, asked whether he agreed, replied with a grin: “Erm, the first three.”

The source of his impatience was quickly identified. Coleen explained that he struggles to wait around — specifically for her. “If we’re getting picked up to go somewhere and we’re leaving the house at 6pm, I’ll be ready by 5.15-5.30,” Wayne said, making clear exactly who the problem was.

When the tables were turned, Wayne was generous in his assessment of Coleen, praising her for holding the household together for their four sons. “Very caring, very efficient in terms of what she does for us as a family,” he said. “She takes care of everything, which allows me to mess around a bit more with the kids.”

The couple also traded gentle barbs over humour. Wayne claimed Coleen lacks one, while declaring his own affection for British sitcoms including Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses.

Despite more than two decades together — and a relationship that has weathered considerable public scrutiny — the pair described themselves as currently on “a good run”, with no serious arguments in weeks. Wayne attributed the relative calm to a personal strategy of strategic silence. “It’s more you shouting at me and me just taking it,” he said. Coleen confirmed: “He goes quiet.”

The interview offers a rare domestic glimpse of one of English football’s most high-profile couples ahead of the docu-series, which promises a closer look at life inside the Rooney household.
