Clément Turpin has been confirmed as the referee for Colombia vs Ghana at Kansas City Stadium, a World Cup last-32 clash that will send the winner into a round-of-16 meeting with Switzerland on July 7.

Turpin, 44, is one of Europe’s most experienced officials. A FIFA-listed referee since 2010, he joined UEFA’s Elite group two years later and has since accumulated 674 competitive matches, the majority in his native Ligue 1. His international portfolio spans three World Cups — including two group-stage assignments at this year’s tournament — as well as European Championship fixtures in 2021 and 2024.

The Frenchman’s biggest club nights came in back-to-back European finals: he refereed the 2021 Europa League final before being handed the Champions League final in Paris in 2022. His disciplinary record is notably measured, with yellow cards averaging just over three per game.

Turpin will be assisted by compatriots Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages, completing a European officiating team for a match contested by sides from South America and Africa. Spanish officials Alejandro Hernández and José Enrique Naranjo have been named fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.

Colombia arrive at this stage having topped Group K ahead of Portugal, reaching the knockout rounds for the third time in as many tournament appearances under coach Néstor Lorenzo. Ghana qualified as one of the eight best third-placed teams, finishing Group L with four points — their third deep run in a World Cup in 20 years.

Switzerland, who await the winner, sealed their place in the last 16 with a 2-0 victory over Algeria.
