Clément Grenier, Lyon icon, targeted by Marseille to join Genesio's coaching staff
Recently qualified as a UEFA A coach, former French international midfielder Clément Grenier, who spent sixteen years at Lyon, is reportedly in Marseille's sights to join Bruno Genesio's future staff at OM.
Clément Grenier could trade the colors of Olympique Lyonnais for the touchline at Olympique de Marseille. According to Onze Mondial, the former French international midfielder, who spent sixteen years in the Rhône region including nine as a professional player, has caught the attention of the new Marseille management to join Bruno Genesio’s coaching staff.
Genesio himself is expected to be officially appointed OM manager in the coming weeks, once the DNCG control scheduled for next week is passed and after new president Stéphane Richard takes office in early July. He would succeed Habib Beye, who failed to achieve the objective of qualifying for the Ligue des Champions.
The 59-year-old coach’s staff is already taking shape: Dimitri Farbos and Jérémie Bréchet, his assistants at Lille, as well as Nicolas Dehon — who previously worked at OM under Didier Deschamps — as goalkeeper coach, are already confirmed. A fitness coach is also expected.
It is in this context that Grenier’s name has emerged. Holder of the UEFA A diploma, the former French international with five caps is now qualified to assist a head coach in Ligue 1. His height of 1.87 m also matches the description of a “former French international measuring 1.87 m” mentioned earlier in the week by sources close to the matter. Genesio, who managed Grenier at Lyon, would view this collaboration favorably.
One major unknown remains: Clément Grenier’s own position. OGC Nice, which is looking to strengthen Olivier Pantaloni’s staff, is also following him, which could complicate Marseille’s plans.
