Scott McTominay has returned to training with Napoli after undergoing a corrective ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital to treat a mild, benign arrhythmia detected in September. The club confirmed on Wednesday that further diagnostic tests had cleared the 29-year-old Scotland international to resume full training alongside his team-mates.
Napoli’s short update read: “On Wednesday, Scott McTominay underwent further diagnostic tests, which showed that he is fit to play. [He] therefore resumed training with the rest of the team after the period spent training separately.”
The former Manchester United midfielder had been prescribed a period of rest following the procedure, which was declared a success. He had previously posted on Instagram to reassure supporters, writing: “See you soon Napoli, I won’t take long.”
McTominay has made just two appearances in Serie A this season. He came off after 56 minutes against Como before the heart issue was identified, and subsequently missed three league fixtures as well as the recent Scotland international break.
His return comes at a difficult time for the national team. New Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli has won just one of his first four matches in charge, with McTominay’s absence a notable factor during that run.
Napoli have not confirmed whether McTominay will be available for selection in their upcoming weekend fixture against Frosinone, though pictures released by the club showed him working alongside team-mates in training on Wednesday.
