Cleall and Leitch come out of retirement to bolster Barbarians Women against Wales
Former England internationals Bryony Cleall and Poppy Leitch have reversed their retirements to join the Barbarians Women's squad for their match against Wales at Allianz Stadium later this month, with Ruby Tui also confirmed in the side.
Bryony Cleall and Poppy Leitch have come out of retirement to represent the Barbarians Women against Wales at Allianz Stadium later this month, joining a squad that also features New Zealand star Ruby Tui in what shapes up as a strong invitational line-up.
The two former England internationals are among a fresh wave of additions announced by the Barbarians, alongside Christine Belisle (Scotland), Laura Delgado (Spain), Charli Jacoby (USA), and Carys Phillips (Wales). Phillips, who has earned 87 caps for her country, will face Wales in the fixture.
Scotland scrum-halves Caity Mattinson and Jenny Maxwell have also been named, with the squad further bolstered by Lagi Tuima (England), Claudia Pena (Spain), and Lori Cramer (Australia). The side will be coached by Susie Appleby and Sarah Hunter, supported by Caroline Sune — the French Under-18 manager who went unbeaten in the recent U18 Six Nations.
Barbarian F.C. Women’s lead Fiona Stockley welcomed the depth of experience assembled. “It is great to be able to name so many experienced international players in this latest squad announcement,” she said. “The lure of the Barbarians is second to none and we have players from across the globe who are excited to wear the famous black and white jersey at Allianz and take on Wales in just under three weeks.”
The full squad will not be confirmed until next week, with the remaining places dependent on the outcome of the Premiership Women’s Rugby semi-finals this weekend. Defending champions Gloucester-Hartpury host Trailfinders Women, while Saracens face Exeter Chiefs at StoneX Stadium.
Stockley added: “We would like to thank all the clubs and Unions who we have worked with on selecting these players and we look forward to announcing the final squad next week.”
