Manchester City have invested more than £150m in the opening weeks of the summer transfer window, moving decisively under new manager Enzo Maresca while several Premier League rivals have been left frustrated in their pursuit of key targets.

The centrepiece of City’s business is the £116m acquisition of Elliot Anderson, who had also been a priority for Manchester United before the Blues moved first. City have since added goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday and winger Jeremy Monga, who was snatched from under Arsenal’s noses at Leicester City. French midfielder Mathys Detourbet arrived from Troyes and has immediately moved to Monaco on loan.

Charles addresses a pressing squad-building need, with uncertainty surrounding James Trafford’s future and City required to meet homegrown player quotas in both the Premier League and Champions League. Monga, widely regarded as a first-team prospect rather than a development signing, gives Maresca an additional attacking option on the flank. City are still in the market for a right back and another winger, but the Anderson deal represents the kind of statement business the club wanted early in the window.

The contrast with their rivals is stark. Manchester United missed out on both Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, and a proposed move for midfielder Ederson remains in doubt. The club are expected to sign André Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, though both represent fallback options after failing to secure first choices.

Aston Villa, despite losing Tielemans, have moved quickly to sign Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to his signature. That outcome deepens concerns at St James’ Park, where Sandro Tonali has departed for Tottenham and Bruno Guimarães is attracting interest from Arsenal, with no deal yet agreed to keep him.

Arsenal are also pursuing Julian Álvarez, but Atlético Madrid are reluctant sellers and Barcelona have entered the picture, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side waiting on multiple fronts. Liverpool have moved more swiftly under Andoni Iraola, spending significantly on Víctor Muñoz and Jérémy Jacquet as their rebuild gathers pace. Tottenham have also been active, while Chelsea face a more complicated window as Xabi Alonso attempts to balance arrivals with the departures needed to satisfy financial regulations.

With the transfer window open for another 50 days, the scramble across the Premier League is far from over. For City, however, the early weeks of Maresca’s tenure have been defined by the kind of calm, structured recruitment that has become a hallmark of the club’s approach — a notable achievement given the scale of managerial change at the Etihad.
