Barcelona's expiring Alvarez offer hands Arsenal a route into £105m striker race
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has warned that the club's offer for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez carries a time limit, potentially opening the door for Arsenal, who are also tracking the Argentine international.
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez has taken a new turn after president Joan Laporta publicly declared that the club’s offer to sign the Atlético Madrid striker is not open-ended — a development that could benefit Arsenal as they monitor the situation.
Laporta confirmed the Catalans have made a substantial bid for the 25-year-old but stressed it will not remain on the table indefinitely. “We’ve made an offer that isn’t unlimited, and in due course we’ll announce how long the offer remains on the table,” he said. “The offer was made with the intention of signing a player who appeals to both the sports management and the coach. I think he’s a great player; we’re maintaining the substantial offer, but the validity of this offer is not unlimited.”
Álvarez has reportedly expressed a preference for a move to the Nou Camp this summer, having spent two impressive seasons at the Wanda Metropolitano since leaving Manchester City, where he largely played second fiddle to Erling Haaland despite consistently performing when given the opportunity. Atlético paid £81.5 million to bring him to Madrid and would expect a significant profit on any sale.
Complicating Barcelona’s approach is Atlético’s firm resistance to selling to a direct domestic rival. Laporta acknowledged the delicate dynamic, noting he had spoken directly with Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil. “As I understand it, we haven’t applied any further pressure — I simply told him that as long as they have an alternative, this offer remains on the table, and that’s where it stands,” he said.
Atlético have already turned down a large bid from Real Madrid, underlining their determination to control the terms of any potential departure. “We’re obviously not going to dance to anyone else’s tune — we’ll set the pace,” Laporta added, speaking on Atlético’s stance.
Arsenal are among the clubs keeping tabs on Álvarez, who is currently on international duty with Argentina at the World Cup. Should Mikel Arteta decide to make a formal move, the Gunners would need to surpass their existing club transfer record of £105 million to have any realistic chance of prising the striker away from the Spanish capital.
With Barcelona’s window of opportunity self-imposed and Atlético showing no urgency to sell, the transfer saga looks set to extend well into the summer.
