Chadwick warns championship leader Antonelli that F1 title pressure will eventually bite

Kimi Antonelli holds an 81-point lead in the Formula 1 World Championship after claiming his eighth victory of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, but three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick believes the 20-year-old Mercedes driver has not yet faced the full force of a title fight.

Chadwick, speaking alongside 1997 F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, acknowledged that Antonelli has managed the psychological demands of leading the standings with impressive composure, but cautioned that the hardest moments are still to come.

“I think there’s always pressure,” Chadwick said. “At the start of the year when you’re talking about being the championship favourite — that weight was being on George’s shoulders more — to then throughout the year ‘can you hold it?’ I think that is something Kimi has dealt with very well this year. He doesn’t seem to be so fazed about the pressure. I think that has helped him as he is driving free still.”

She added: “But it does get at you. At some point it’s going to come down to the finish point and if he continues the way he is, of course, he’s going to walk away with it — but there are still many races to go. If it gets right down to the wire, that’s where pressure will ramp up.”

Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell sits second in the drivers’ standings, 81 points adrift, with the early-season expectation that the Briton would be the primary title contender having faded as the Italian teenager’s dominance grew.

Villeneuve offered a more favourable reading of Antonelli’s situation, suggesting the young driver is benefiting from the kind of fortune that often accompanies a champion in the making.

“It’s a huge lead on his team-mate,” the Canadian said. “And right now he has what we call all the ‘luck of a champion’, which is everything goes well. Even when he makes a mistake, somehow it turns out to be good. He keeps racking up the points, so it’s very difficult for him to lose enough points to lose the championship lead right now.”

With the season still far from over, Antonelli’s ability to maintain his current level of performance under mounting scrutiny will be the defining test of his title credentials.
