Casey and Loughman return to bolster Munster before Bulls test at Thomond Park

Munster will have Craig Casey and Jeremy Loughman available for selection when they host the Bulls at Thomond Park on Saturday, providing a timely lift for head coach Clayton McMillan after a chastening opening-round defeat.

The pair return from Ireland commitments to strengthen a Munster squad that fell to a 26-20 home loss against Glasgow Warriors in Round 1, a result that stung all the more given they had led 17-7 at half-time before the visitors overturned the deficit in the second half.

Further encouragement arrives on the injury front, with Tom Ahern, Jack Aungier, Shane Daly and Ruadhán Quinn all set to return to training this week ahead of the Bulls’ visit. The province will, however, be without full-back Mike Haley, who sustained a knee injury against Glasgow. Diarmuid Barron, Jack O’Donoghue and Alex Nankivell also remain unavailable as they continue through return-to-play protocols.

Against Glasgow, Munster had looked well-placed to open their campaign with a win. JJ Hanrahan kicked them into an early lead, Ben O’Connor crossed for the opening try, and Michael Milne’s score helped establish a 10-point cushion by the interval. The second half told a different story: Nathan McBeth reduced the deficit before George Horne put the Warriors ahead late on, and Jamie Dobie — marking his 100th Glasgow appearance — scored his second try of the evening to seal a bonus-point victory for the visitors.

The challenge does not ease this weekend. The Bulls arrive at Thomond Park having opened their own campaign with a commanding 47-13 win away to Zebre Parma, and they reach this fixture as last season’s URC finalists. For Munster, the return of Casey and Loughman represents a meaningful upgrade in depth as McMillan’s side seek their first win of the season in front of their home support.
