Carrick's academy message as 19-year-old Lacey shines and Gabriel pushes to leave United

Shea Lacey marked his first Manchester United start with a goal against Brighton in Wednesday’s League Cup tie, but the 19-year-old’s breakthrough moment was overshadowed by a 3-2 defeat — and by growing uncertainty over the future of teenage prospect JJ Gabriel.

Lacey opened the scoring after just seven minutes at Old Trafford, cutting inside from the right wing before finishing with his left foot. United led 2-0 before Brighton overturned the deficit to win 3-2, knocking the Red Devils out of the competition.

Manager Michael Carrick was quick to praise Lacey’s contribution despite the result. “I’m delighted for him,” Carrick said. “The way the game pans out and the finish of the game and the result, I think it takes it away a little bit but, when the dust settles and he can have a moment, I think he can be very proud of himself because it was a big moment for him.”

Carrick then appeared to address the broader question of academy progression — comments widely interpreted as an indirect message to Gabriel, who had been tipped for inclusion in the Brighton squad before being left out. “So many people in the academy work so hard and it’s what this club has been built upon,” Carrick said. “So Shea’s had that moment… and we’ll see who brings it on to having the next opportunity because we always look forward to the next one.”

Gabriel, 15, made his senior debut in a pre-season friendly against Atlético Madrid in August, playing eight minutes, but has not featured for the first team since. Reports suggest the teenager — regarded as one of the most promising young players in world football — is now pushing to leave the club amid uncertainty behind the scenes.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard also weighed in on the Gabriel situation, adding further prominence to a story that has become an unwelcome distraction for United.

The Gabriel saga compounds a difficult start to the campaign for the Red Devils, who have won just one of their opening five Premier League matches. That run includes a 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester City last weekend and an opening-day 2-0 loss to newly promoted Hull. Injuries have further disrupted Carrick’s squad, leaving the club with little of the momentum they carried into the new season.
