Manchester United earned a 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Saturday, giving interim manager Michael Carrick a measure of breathing room after a week that threatened to spiral into full-blown crisis following Lisandro Martinez’s public broadside against the club’s board.

Carrick has now overseen just two wins from 10 games, leaving United six matches without a victory, yet the performance in West Yorkshire carried more encouragement than the bare result implies. The display was built on grit and collective commitment — qualities that, according to Martinez himself, the dressing room believes Carrick deserves credit for rather than blame.

The timing of the draw carries an uncomfortable echo. United’s previous visit to Elland Road, 288 days earlier, ended in an identical 1-1 scoreline under Ruben Amorim, who was sacked the following day. Carrick, by contrast, extracted the kind of response from his players that Amorim rarely managed to produce.

Martinez had made clear earlier in the week that senior players did not hold Carrick responsible for United’s poor run — a view that appeared to manifest on the pitch. His own week had been turbulent: after United’s Champions League defeat in Madrid, the Argentine defender turned his anger publicly on the club’s board, then spent considerable time on Thursday carefully negotiating the wording of an apology that stopped short of actually apologising for what he had said.

Tactically, Carrick rolled the dice in West Yorkshire, departing from the 4-2-3-1 system he had used since January. With Ayden Heaven absent through illness, United’s shape was difficult to read early on — a back three out of possession, with Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot reprising wing-back roles reminiscent of the Amorim era, while Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo operated in close proximity in attack.

United were slow to impose themselves, not registering a touch in the Leeds penalty area until the 27th minute. When they did, Mbeumo — who had wasted two clear chances in Madrid — headed Youri Tielemans’ cross wide with no defender near him. The Belgian forward redeemed himself shortly afterwards, converting after Tielemans and Amad combined well down the right flank.

The draw will not silence the broader questions surrounding United’s season, but it at least provides Carrick with a foundation. The players’ willingness to run and fight for a manager operating under significant pressure was, in its own way, a statement — one that aligned with exactly what Martinez had said, even if the manner in which he said it caused a week of unnecessary turbulence.
