Carrick rules out Leao as United chiefs prepare to fly to Madrid for £85m Tchouameni talks
Michael Carrick has reportedly dismissed Rafael Leao as a transfer target despite the AC Milan winger being offered to Manchester United, while club officials are preparing to travel to Madrid to explore a deal for Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, with any sale expected to exceed £85 million.
Michael Carrick has turned down the chance to sign AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, according to reports, even after the Portugal international’s representatives contacted Manchester United directly over a possible move. Meanwhile, United’s hierarchy is reportedly preparing to fly to Madrid to hold talks over a potential £85 million-plus deal for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
Carrick, confirmed as United’s permanent manager after an impressive stint as interim boss, is targeting midfield reinforcements as the club prepares for a return to the Champions League next season. Spanish outlet Diario AS reports that Tchouameni is firmly on United’s radar, with club officials set to travel to the Spanish capital to open discussions. The publication notes, however, that Real Madrid will not sanction any departures this summer for less than £85 million.
A further complication is the player’s own preference. Tchouameni is understood to want to remain at the Bernabeu. AS points to the established transfer relationship between the two clubs — Raphael Varane moved from Madrid to Manchester in 2021, with Casemiro following a year later — as a factor that could help any deal progress.
On the Leao front, The Sun reports that Carrick does not view the AC Milan forward as a target despite his agent’s approach. Leao has previously been linked with Tottenham, and Saudi Pro League clubs as well as Barcelona are cited as alternative destinations.
Atalanta midfielder Ederson remains on course to become United’s first summer signing, with a medical anticipated before a deal is finalised. A further midfield addition beyond Tchouameni is also being considered as Carrick looks to reshape the squad ahead of the new campaign.
