Carrick hails Mainoo's hunger after midfielder silences doubters with standout Ipswich display

Kobbie Mainoo has answered questions about his form and fitness with his most complete performance yet for Manchester United, and head coach Michael Carrick says the young midfielder’s hunger to keep improving is the key to his continued development.

Mainoo started in a deeper midfield role against Ipswich last weekend and produced a display that, according to Carrick, laid to rest any concerns about his defensive work — concerns previously voiced by former United manager Ruben Amorim. The 21-year-old had spent the summer largely on the periphery, failing to earn a single minute across England’s eight World Cup matches under Thomas Tuchel, before returning to Old Trafford for the final week of pre-season.

“I think obviously Kobbie made big strides last season from finishing the season so strong and played ever so well last week again,” said Carrick. “You can see in him his development and how much he’s improving certain aspects of his game. He wants to learn, is hungry to learn, wants more all the time, which is great.”

Carrick was particularly impressed that Mainoo has not allowed a strong run of form to breed complacency. “He has had a really good eight months since I’ve been in, and it would be easy for him to think, ‘This is all right, you know, I’ve got in the team, played a lot of games, and everything’s good.’ But he’s pushing for more, as he should.”

That mentality will be tested this season. United spent £155 million on three new midfielders over the summer — Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans — all of whom will be pushing for starting berths. Mason Mount, who impressed in pre-season before missing a month through injury, adds further competition.

Carrick, however, framed the crowded midfield as a collective strength rather than a zero-sum battle. “The competition’s a positive thing. It’s not necessarily because it’s either one player or the other — it’s a collective to know that it’s a strong group. You can learn off each other, you can help each other, and certainly as a midfield group, we feel that it’s really strong.”

Mainoo first emerged as a first-team force in the second half of last season, a run of performances strong enough to earn him a late call-up to England’s 26-man World Cup squad. His display against Ipswich suggests that trajectory has not been interrupted by a difficult summer, and Carrick believes there is still more to come from the academy graduate.
