Carreras moves to fly-half again as Russell misses Bath's clash with Leicester
Santi Carreras will wear Bath's No.10 jersey for the third time this season as Finn Russell remains sidelined with a tight calf ahead of Saturday's Gallagher Premiership home fixture against Leicester Tigers.
Santi Carreras will start at fly-half for Bath against Leicester Tigers on Saturday, 6 June, with Finn Russell still unavailable due to a tight calf injury. The Argentina international has an unblemished record in the No.10 shirt, having featured in Bath’s wins away to Newcastle in December and Sale Sharks in March.
Carreras’s kicking accuracy will be under scrutiny, however. Across those two appearances he converted just eight of 13 attempts from the tee — a 61.5% success rate — and with second place in the Gallagher Premiership likely to be settled by fine margins, Bath will be hoping the Puma can replicate the precision he showed during last year’s Rugby Championship.
Johann van Graan opted against handing the playmaking role to Ciaran Donoghue, who is only two games into his return from the serious knee injury he sustained against Munster in pre-season. The 23-year-old does not feature on the bench either, with Max Ojomoh continuing to impress at inside centre and Cam Redpath named among the replacements to provide cover at ten.
Up front, van Graan names an unchanged tight five from last week’s outing against Bristol Bears. Beno Obano, Kepueli Tuipulotu and Thomas du Toit form the front row, with Ted Hill and Charlie Ewels locking in behind them. The head coach has made three personnel changes and one positional switch in total to the side that faced Bristol.
