Canal+ launched on Friday, October 9, Sport+, a free digital platform dedicated to sports, accessible this weekend with live coverage of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.

The platform offers highlights in slight delay, multiplex feeds from the Ligue des Champions, Ligue Europa and Premier League, as well as events broadcast entirely live. A “Multi-live” mode allows users to follow several European football matches simultaneously, in the form of a tiled wall with sound. “It will remain a tiled wall, without switching to full screen, but with the multiplex sound to give it flavour,” explained Thomas Sénécal, head of sports at Canal+.

Beyond the Singapore GP, several events are already scheduled: Top 14 matches, MotoGP, the Ligue Europa match Rennes-Crete on Thursday, October 15, and the Arkema Première Ligue match Lyon-Marseille on Saturday, October 24.

Canal+ openly acknowledges the commercial dimension of the initiative. Christophe Pinard-Legry, chief executive officer of Canal+ Europe, estimates at eight million the number of people who consult the group’s content each month via its website or application. “The aim is of course to show them our expertise and seduce them to convince them one day to take out a subscription,” he said. Sport+ is thus designed as a showcase intended to convert these non-paying users into subscribers.
