Camara embraces 'very surprising' F1 debut on home soil after Ocon's Haas exit
Ferrari junior Rafa Camara will make his Formula 1 debut at Interlagos this weekend after being called up by Haas to replace Esteban Ocon mid-season — several months ahead of his planned 2027 arrival. The 21-year-old Brazilian says he intends to enjoy the occasion rather than be overwhelmed by it.
Rafa Camara will step into a Formula 1 car for the first time this weekend at Interlagos, drafted in by Haas to replace Esteban Ocon following the Frenchman’s high-profile mid-weekend exit at the Mexican Grand Prix. The 21-year-old Brazilian, who was not due to join the team until 2027, described the call-up as “very surprising” but showed little sign of nerves in front of a packed media gathering at his home race.
Camara arrives with a thin preparation window and a steep learning curve. He has never driven a 2026-spec F1 car, has never raced at Interlagos, and had limited time to ready himself for the weekend. His only prior simulator work came through a scheduled FP1 appearance for Ferrari that was already in the diary, giving him at least a baseline of preparation in Maranello before the unexpected promotion.
What he does carry into the weekend is considerable momentum. As the current Formula 2 championship leader and a driver long regarded as one of Ferrari’s most exciting prospects, Camara announced himself emphatically during a private test with Haas at Portimao — going so quickly that regular driver Oliver Bearman struggled to match his pace. That performance was enough to convince team principal Ayao Komatsu to hand Camara the seat for the full 2027 season, a decision that has now been accelerated by circumstance.
“I was very surprised,” Camara told media in Brazil. “Definitely not a place where I would expect to make my debut in Formula 1, but just very happy for the opportunity, very grateful as well for the team to put trust in me this week. So I’m just trying to enjoy the home race and have some fun out there.”
The pressure of a home debut on short notice is well-documented. Kimi Antonelli crashed in Friday practice at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix on his F1 bow, and was visibly drained by the intensity of his Imola homecoming the following season. Camara acknowledged the surge in attention but said external noise has never destabilised him.
“There will be a lot of things going on,” he said. “But I think it should be all right. Whatever people are speaking about or what’s happening outside, it’s never been a real problem. I always try to just focus on my side, focus on things that I can control.”
Few rookies have been handed a debut quite like this — unplanned, at home, and in front of a crowd that will be watching his every move. How Camara handles the weekend will offer the clearest indication yet of whether Ferrari’s faith in their prized junior is already justified.
