Calf injury rules Keiron Assiratti out of Wales' Nations Championship tour
Cardiff tighthead prop Keiron Assiratti has been withdrawn from Steve Tandy's Wales squad after suffering a calf injury in Cardiff's URC quarter-final defeat to the Stormers, ruling him out of July fixtures against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa.
Cardiff tighthead prop Keiron Assiratti will miss Wales’ entire Nations Championship campaign in July after being withdrawn from Steve Tandy’s squad with a calf injury sustained during Cardiff’s United Rugby Championship quarter-final defeat to the Stormers.
The 28-year-old, who has earned 19 caps for Wales, picked up the injury at a difficult time for the national side’s front-row depth. Tandy has not yet called up a replacement for Assiratti, leaving the squad short of tighthead options heading into a demanding summer schedule.
Wales open their summer programme against the Barbarians at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium on June 27, before three consecutive Nations Championship weekends in July — hosting Fiji in Cardiff, then travelling to face Argentina in San Juan and South Africa in Durban.
Assiratti’s absence compounds existing tighthead concerns for Tandy. Tomas Francis has been granted a summer break and will not be available, while Archie Griffin is sidelined and undergoing surgery on a foot problem. The combination of injuries and planned absences leaves Wales with limited experienced options in one of rugby’s most specialised positions ahead of a gruelling southern-hemisphere tour leg.
