Bryce Mitchell needed every second of three rounds to finish Santiago Luna, locking in an arm-triangle choke with just eight seconds left on the clock at UFC Vegas 118 on Saturday to improve to 2-0 as a bantamweight.

Luna, a 21-year-old Mexican prospect who entered the fight with an unblemished 8-0 record, stepped in on just nine days’ notice as a replacement for Victor Henry, who was forced to withdraw with a knee injury. Despite the short turnaround, Luna proved a willing and capable opponent, showing no hesitation in testing his grappling against one of the division’s most accomplished wrestlers.

That willingness to engage on the ground ultimately proved costly. Mitchell consistently worked to better positions throughout the contest, smothering Luna with his wrestling and grinding down the younger fighter’s resistance over three rounds. Luna’s eagerness to grapple gave Mitchell the openings he needed to establish control.

With the fight heading toward a decision, Mitchell seized top position late in the third round and pressed relentlessly for a finish. He eventually secured the arm-triangle choke and held on as the clock expired, earning the submission with barely enough time for the referee to intervene.

Mitchell, who previously competed at featherweight, has now settled comfortably at 135 pounds. The win takes his overall UFC record to 10-3, with his bantamweight ledger a perfect 2-0. For Luna, the defeat ends a nine-fight unbeaten run in professional MMA, leaving him at 8-1.

After the fight, Mitchell took time to praise Luna for accepting the bout on short notice and giving him the opportunity to compete.
