Manchester United are shaping their summer transfer business with notable input from their own dressing room, with Bruno Fernandes the latest player reported to have lobbied the club’s hierarchy over a potential signing.

The United captain has urged the club to pursue West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to a report first published by The Telegraph in May. The 21-year-old Portuguese playmaker is widely expected to leave the London Stadium following West Ham’s Premier League relegation, and Bruno is said to have spoken glowingly of his compatriot to United’s decision-makers after time spent together on international duty with Portugal.

The move would follow a pattern already established this window. Departing midfielder Casemiro, 34, reportedly pointed United toward his Brazil international team-mate Ederson as a potential successor before leaving the club. United are now in advanced talks to sign the Atalanta midfielder for £39m, though the deal has been delayed after Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup 2026 squad.

Mateus Fernandes arrived in English football with Southampton in 2024 before West Ham paid just over £40m to sign him late in last summer’s transfer window. Despite the Hammers’ relegation, the club are determined to maximise their return on the player and have placed a valuation of around £80m on him, though his eventual fee is expected to fall short of that figure.

United face significant competition for the Portugal international. The Times has reported that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is also an admirer and could enter the race, a scenario that carries an uncomfortable echo for Bruno Fernandes. When Declan Rice completed his £100m move to Arsenal in 2023, Fernandes later admitted he was “really sad” that the England midfielder chose north London over Old Trafford. The Gunners could once again emerge as the most formidable rival standing between United and a player their captain wants at the club.
