Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick to guide Manchester United to a 5-2 victory against Ipswich Town, giving the Red Devils their first win of the season following an opening defeat at Hull City (2-0).
The match started poorly for Manchester United: Leif Davis opened the scoring for Ipswich in the 29th minute. Fernandes then took control, first reducing the deficit before half-time (40th), before putting Manchester United ahead from the penalty spot (61st) and extending the lead (68th). Between his two latest goals, an own goal from Jacob Greaves (56th) had allowed Michael Carrick’s side to take the lead.
Fernandes then turned provider for Bryan Mbeumo (82nd), making it 5-1. Chuba Akpom’s late consolation in added time (90+1) did not dent Manchester United’s dominance.
This performance came just days after the Portuguese midfielder received the player of the year trophy for 2025-2026, awarded by his peers. With five goals and one assist in a single match, Fernandes confirmed this distinction in the best possible way.
Manchester United travel to Everton next weekend before beginning their UEFA Champions League campaign against Sabah Baku, then facing Manchester City in the derby on 13 October.
