Bristol Bears lose Janse van Rensburg for three weeks after Henry Pollock collision
Benhard Janse van Rensburg has been ruled out for three weeks after suffering a head injury collision with Northampton's Henry Pollock, leaving Bristol without the England centre for Saturday's trip to Saracens and the Champions Cup clash with Stormers in Cape Town.
Bristol Bears centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg will miss the next three weeks of action after sustaining a head injury in last weekend’s Premiership win over Northampton Saints at Ashton Gate, head coach Pat Lam confirmed. The England midfielder collided with Northampton flanker Henry Pollock’s knee during the match and must complete HIA protocols before returning to play.
The enforced absence means Van Rensburg will sit out Saturday’s Premiership fixture at Saracens’ StoneX Stadium — a ground where Bristol have never won — as well as the Champions Cup trip to face the Stormers in Cape Town. Lam expects the centre to be available again for the Premiership Round 4 clash with Exeter Chiefs on October 24, alongside prop Ellis Genge, who is also working his way back from injury.
Lam moved quickly to frame the setback in context, pointing to a far more damaging injury toll his squad endured last season. “After last year, thankfully, it’s only a few games,” he said. “This is compared to the 8, 10, 12 whole-season injuries we’ve had, so this seems pretty easy.”
The Bristol head coach was also keen to stress that the team’s system, rather than any individual, is the foundation of their unbeaten start to the season. “Our game’s not built around BV. Our game’s around BV’s specific role that he needs to do, and he does it brilliantly — we know that 100 per cent — but it’s not built around him,” Lam said.
He added that the squad’s experience of navigating injuries last year has given the group the tools to absorb the loss without a significant drop in performance. “We build the team around clarity on roles, so BV has a role, and he brings that into it. Then the next guy comes in and does the same role,” Lam explained. “We have some good centres there that will step in, and they know the role doesn’t change.”
Bristol’s last victory over Saracens dates back to August 2020, a 16-12 win at Ashton Gate, making Saturday’s fixture a significant opportunity for Lam’s side to end that run while protecting their perfect record in the early weeks of the Premiership season.
