Branthwaite earns first Tuchel call-up after two years of injury misery with Everton
Jarrad Branthwaite has been named in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia and Czechia, more than a year after a groin operation, thigh problem and two hamstring surgeries disrupted his career.
Jarrad Branthwaite has received his first England call-up under Thomas Tuchel after a summer spent in Germany addressing the persistent injury problems that have plagued him since 2023, with the Everton centre-back now targeting a regular place in the international setup ahead of Nations League matches against Spain, Croatia and Czechia.
The 24-year-old’s only previous cap came as a 30-minute substitute against Bosnia-Herzegovina in June 2024, part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 warm-up programme. What followed was a harrowing sequence of setbacks: a groin operation and then a thigh problem kept him out until October 2024, before a hamstring injury sustained in pre-season last year required further surgery and restricted him to just ten appearances. That campaign ended prematurely when he was carried off with another hamstring problem during April’s Merseyside derby.
Determined to break the cycle, Branthwaite and Everton took a more comprehensive approach over the summer. He spent three to four weeks in Germany working with a specialist team to examine movement patterns, neurological factors and overall load management.
“I sat down with the club after the three or four times where I was picking up the injuries,” Branthwaite said. “It was to look at the wider picture, look at the holistic approach of the body essentially. There were a lot of different things looked at like movement patterns, the brain. It was quite complex but fingers crossed it has worked.”
The results so far have been encouraging. Branthwaite has played every minute of Everton’s Premier League campaign this season, having been rested for the club’s two Carabao Cup fixtures as part of a managed workload.
“It is probably the worst thing as a footballer not to be on the pitch and when it keeps happening it is mentally tough because you are sort of doubting your body,” he admitted. “I think now I am in a position where I got managed throughout the pre-season, managed my load well and hopefully I can stay on the pitch this season.”
The recall comes at a time when Branthwaite acknowledges he has ground to make up in the international pecking order, having missed several squad gatherings during his injury-hit spell. Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa are among those ahead of him in contention, but he views the Tuchel call-up as a meaningful step forward.
“Being out for such a long time with injury didn’t help, missing three or four of the camps and missing a lot of football,” he said. “My aim is to stay injury free and play as many games as I can and keep giving myself the best possible chance to be in the squad.”
Branthwaite was also a £70m transfer target for Manchester United in the summer of 2024, though the club failed to meet Everton’s valuation. His focus now is squarely on fitness and forcing his way into Tuchel’s plans ahead of the 2026 World Cup cycle.
