Hall signs five-year Newcastle deal, calling snub of Man Utd a 'no-brainer' under Jaissle

Lewis Hall has signed a five-year contract extension with Newcastle United, dismissing Manchester United’s summer pursuit as a non-issue and pointing to the arrival of head coach Matthias Jaissle as the decisive reason he stayed at St James’ Park.

The 21-year-old left-back was among several Newcastle players linked with moves away after a difficult 2024-25 campaign that saw Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon all depart. United, in need of a left-back, were reported to be particularly keen, but Newcastle refused to sanction a sale and Hall quickly made clear he had no desire to leave.

“Whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right,” Hall said. “I took that as a positive, but at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve.”

Hall was emphatic about the role Jaissle played in his thinking. “After not many conversations, not many training sessions, I knew that the manager was going to be really good for this club,” he added. “As soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.”

Jaissle, 38, replaced Eddie Howe in the summer after arriving from Red Bull Salzburg and has overseen two wins from Newcastle’s opening five Premier League fixtures, with only one defeat. The German has integrated a significant number of new signings, many of them relatively unknown quantities at the top level, and the early signs have been encouraging.

Hall himself has been one of the more consistent performers in that transitional period, though not without difficult moments — most notably conceding a stoppage-time penalty against Liverpool. Despite that, his form has been sufficient to earn a recall to the England squad, a notable turnaround after he missed out on the summer World Cup. His omission from that tournament was partly attributed to a dip in form at the end of last season, which Hall has since linked to being deployed out of position on the right by Howe rather than in his natural left-back role.

With Hall now tied down long-term and Jaissle steadying the ship after last season’s turbulence, Newcastle appear to be rebuilding momentum heading into the rest of the campaign.
