Gabriel Bonfim dismantled former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad across all five rounds at UFC Vegas 118 on Saturday, earning a clean 50-45 unanimous decision to announce himself as a genuine title contender at 170 pounds.

Heading into the main event, Bonfim carried a four-fight winning streak but had yet to face a truly elite welterweight. Muhammad, despite dropping two straight, still commanded respect as a recent champion. Bonfim erased any doubt emphatically, using crisp boxing and sharp low kicks to control the distance throughout, leaving Muhammad a bloodied and beaten figure by the final bell.

The pattern that has haunted Muhammad in recent outings repeated itself here. He resisted going to his trademark wrestling game early, and when he finally shot for a takedown in the third round, Bonfim was already well ahead on the scorecards and stuffed it without difficulty. Rather than adjusting, Muhammad continued to engage in a kickboxing exchange with a bigger, younger opponent — a decision that cost him dearly over the championship rounds.

All three judges scored every round for Bonfim, a verdict that reflected the one-sided nature of the contest. Muhammad, who captured the UFC welterweight title in July 2024, has now lost three consecutive fights, leaving his career trajectory in serious question.

In his post-fight interview, Bonfim showed respect for his opponent, bringing Muhammad over to join him and acknowledging the long road the former champion had taken to reach the title. He then wasted no time identifying his next target: fellow former welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena.

“Jack Maddalena, stay ready,” Bonfim said through a Portuguese translator. “You’re right there. You’re my next opponent. I just got to the top 5, and I want to be active. You’re next.”

Muhammad entered the fight ranked fifth in the UFC welterweight division — a position Bonfim is expected to inherit when the promotion updates its rankings. With Della Maddalena also firmly in the title conversation, a matchup between the two would carry significant weight in determining the next challenger at 170 pounds.
